[English]

Objective: The tourism and hospitality industry has increasingly been affected by digital transformation, intensifying competition, and changing patterns of customer behavior, creating a growing need for the development of organizational capabilities and the effective use of data-driven technologies. In this context, organizational capabilities, including resource orchestration capabilities, artificial intelligence capabilities, and digital marketing capabilities, can provide the foundation for value creation and improved organizational performance. However, the mechanism through which these capabilities are transformed into performance outcomes through analytical and technological processes remains insufficiently understood. Therefore, this study aims to examine the effect of organizational capabilities, including resource orchestration capabilities, artificial intelligence capabilities, and digital marketing capabilities, on the performance of tourism and hospitality companies by emphasizing the mediating role of business intelligence adoption and the moderating role of technological orientation.
Methods: This study is applied in terms of purpose and descriptive-analytical in terms of methodology. The statistical population consisted of managers, deputies, supervisors, and experts working in active hotels in Mashhad, Iran. Due to limitations in accessing a complete sampling framework, convenience sampling was employed. A total of 136 valid questionnaires were collected and used for the final analysis. Data were gathered using a standardized questionnaire based on previous studies in the fields of organizational capabilities,  business  intelligence  adoption, technological orientation, and organizational performance. The validity and reliability of the measurement instrument were assessed and confirmed. To test the proposed research model, partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) was employed using SmartPLS 3 software.
Results: The findings revealed that resource orchestration capabilities, artificial intelligence capabilities, and digital marketing capabilities have a positive and significant effect on business intelligence adoption. This indicates that organizations with greater abilities in coordinating resources, utilizing intelligent technologies, and managing digital customer and market data are more capable of adopting and effectively using business intelligence systems. Furthermore, business intelligence adoption was found to have a positive and significant effect on the performance of tourism and hospitality companies, and its mediating role in the relationship between organizational capabilities and organizational performance was confirmed. In other words, organizational capabilities alone do not necessarily lead to superior performance; rather, they generate performance improvements when they are effectively utilized through analytical processes and data-driven decision-making mechanisms. In addition, the results showed that technological orientation does not significantly moderate the relationship between digital marketing capabilities and business intelligence adoption. This finding suggests that merely having a positive attitude toward technology does not necessarily result in effective business intelligence adoption unless appropriate data infrastructures, analytical skills, and organizational processes are developed.
Conclusion: The findings demonstrate that business intelligence adoption, as a knowledge-based mechanism, plays a critical role in transforming digital and organizational capabilities into superior performance in the tourism and hospitality industry. Accordingly, hotel managers should not only invest in emerging technologies but also focus on developing internal organizational capabilities, enhancing employees’ data analytics skills, fostering a data-driven culture, and integrating information systems. Such initiatives can facilitate more effective decision-making, improve operational efficiency, and enhance the competitive performance of hotels.
Innovation: The innovation of this study lies in developing an integrated model to explain the pathway through which organizational capabilities influence the performance of tourism and hospitality companies through the mediating role of business intelligence adoption. Furthermore, the simultaneous examination of organizational capabilities, business intelligence, and technological orientation within the context of Iran’s hospitality industry, particularly hotels located in Mashhad as one of the country’s most important tourism destinations, represents a distinctive aspect of this research.
